Mike Ward has worked in the field of sustainable development for over 20 years. He held senior management positions in the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA) for 20 years and served as a Board member 8 years. Mike was instrumental in setting up and initially managing a regional environmental education programme across 13 countries in southern Africa. He developed and ran education for sustainable development programmes in Sweden, India, China, Nigeria and Kenya. Mike has a Bachelor of Arts degree, a MSc in International Environmental Science, an MBA and is currently the recipient of a National Research Foundation Scholarship to do a PhD on organizational learning and the integration of sustainable development in business. Mike is the founder and Director of Creating Sustainable Value (Pty) Ltd and is working with government, business and civil society organisations to create economic value while simultaneously doing contributing to environmental sustainability and social inclusivity. Recent work includes a study for the Public Sector Education Training Authority on Green Supply Chain Management; an evaluation of the Wise Wayz Water Care project that brings together business, the local community and government departments in eThekwini; a review of the skills required to support a just transition of the petroleum industry; and a green economy inventory for PAGE (UNEP, ILO and DEA). Mike’s passion is working with decision makers and governance structures to create sustainable value for all sectors of society.
