Karen McCarthy

Karen McCarthy is from Johannesburg, and completed her undergraduate, honours and master’s degrees at the University of Johannesburg. Her research interest is in exploring the interaction between ethics and narrative fiction, particularly in the generative contact points of friendship, narcissistic relationships, and death. Her supervisor for her PhD project, which is currently underway, is Professor Mike Marais. The thesis explores narcissism and absent/dead women in the work of John Banville. Karen is a lecturer at the Institute for the Study of English in Africa (ISEA) at Rhodes University.
