Rat Western has a BAFA and MAFA from the University of the Witwatersrand.  She is a practicing artist whose work ranges from animation and digital video installation to live performance.

Western is a Senior Lecturer in the Fine Art Department at Rhodes and is in her 2nd year of PhD study.  Her thesis entitled, A Practitioner’s Guide to Faking It: Authenticity, Sincerity and Value in South African Experiential Visual Culture,applies literary and tourism theory to understandings of authenticity and sincerity, as well as reader-response criticism to examine several case studies of participatory, collaborative and/or site-specific South African artwork.

She is supervised by Dr Deborah Seddon.
