The discussions and outcomes of the visit highlighted the importance of effective communication, strategic alignment, and joint initiatives to amplify the impact of sustainability science on a global scale. The following are some of the visit’s key outcomes and discussions.

  1. Strengthening Collaborative Frameworks: The visit emphasised the need for robust and structured collaboration between the Africa and Japan Hubs. Both parties recognised the value of leveraging their unique strengths and resources to support global sustainability initiatives. A key outcome was the agreement to establish a formalised partnership framework, which will include regular knowledge-sharing sessions, joint research projects, and coordinated advocacy efforts to influence policy and practice.
  2. Capacity Building for Early- and Mid-Career Researchers: A major focus of the discussions was the development of a capacity-building program tailored to early- and mid-career researchers. Inspired by the successful Trans-disciplinarity for Early Career Researchers in Asia model, the two Hubs will explore the design and implementation of a similar program for African researchers. This initiative aims to enhance interdisciplinary research skills, foster cross-cultural collaboration, and empower the next generation of sustainability scientists to address complex global challenges.
  3. Research Collaboration Between RIHN and Africa Sustainability Science Clusters: The visit facilitated in-depth discussions on potential collaborations between the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN) and the African sustainability science clusters. The Future Earth Africa Hub Leadership Centre’s visit to the Future Earth Japan Hub was a resounding success, marking the beginning of a dynamic and impactful partnership. By combining their expertise, resources, and networks, the two Hubs are poised to make significant contributions to sustainability science and global efforts to achieve a more sustainable and equitable future. The visit not only strengthened ties between the Africa and Japan Hubs but also reinforced the importance of international collaboration in addressing the pressing challenges of our time.

The visit serves as a testament to the shared vision and commitment of both Hubs to advancing sustainability science and fostering a culture of collaboration, research and innovation, and capacity building.
