The sessions aimed to highlight the Centre’s efforts in advancing sustainability science in Africa, fostering collaboration, and addressing continental challenges through innovative and transdisciplinary approaches. These sessions provided a platform for the Future Africa Hub and the Leadership Centre staff, as well as Steering Committee members, to share insights, engage with participants, and promote the work of the Hub and its Sustainability Science Clusters

Session 1: Empowering Sustainability Science in Africa

The first session, titled "Empowering Sustainability Science in Africa: Integrating Efforts and Addressing Continental Challenges through the Future Earth Africa Hub Leadership Centre and Its Sustainability Science Clusters," focused on the collaborative efforts of the FEAHLC and its clusters to tackle pressing sustainability issues.

During this session, presentations were delivered by the FEAHLC staff and three members of the Steering Committee Steering Committee. They provided an overview of the Hub’s strategic initiatives, the role of the Leadership Centre in driving innovation, and the contributions of the Sustainability Science Clusters in addressing key challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and food security.

The session was well-attended, with participants expressing keen interest in learning more about the FEAHLC’s work. Discussions emphasised the importance of integrating efforts across disciplines, sectors, and regions to achieve sustainable development goals in Africa. Participants also highlighted the need for stronger partnerships and capacity-building initiatives to empower local researchers and practitioners.

Session 2: Advancing Sustainability Science in Africa

The second session, titled "Advancing Sustainability Science in Africa: Embracing Transdisciplinary Research," explored the transformative potential of transdisciplinary approaches in addressing complex sustainability challenges.

Presentations during this session underscored the importance of bridging the gap between science, policy, and practice. The FEAHLC staff and Steering Committee members shared insights on successful transdisciplinary projects, the challenges of implementing such approaches, and the lessons learned. They also discussed the role of the FEAHLC in fostering collaboration among researchers, policymakers, and communities to co-create solutions that are both scientifically robust and socially relevant.

The session attracted a diverse audience, including academics, policymakers, and representatives from civil society. Participants engaged in lively discussions on how to strengthen transdisciplinary research in Africa, with a particular focus on enhancing stakeholder engagement, improving communication strategies, and securing funding for collaborative initiatives.

The FEAHLC’s participation in the Science Forum South Africa 2024 was highly impactful.
