The Future Earth Africa Hub Leadership Centre organised a science clusters workshop that was held at the University of Pretoria Future Africa Campus, on 27 and 28 November 2023. The workshop brought together scientists and sustainability experts, FEAHLC Consortium Partners, and the FEAH Secretariat.

The two-day discussion covered crucial subjects concerning the implementation and operation of the science clusters as well as the scoping study. The discussion highlighted some issues that face sustainability science in Africa such as inadequate resources and the lack of science leadership in the field. There was also an open discussion on how to create research clusters that support a cooperative sustainability science vision for African scientific leadership. The workshop fostered a sense of community and collaboration among participants, particularly the science cluster leads, by offering a platform for discussion and exchange. Participants were urged to think about both short- and long-term activities to maintain and enhance collaboration after the workshop. In the medium range, the cluster leaders will initiate the cluster work and in the short term, members will share information about their science cluster emphasis, curriculum, and structure.
