The Sustainability Science Clusters are collaborative groups focusing on thematic areas of sustainability science. They work cross-regionally to connect scientists, strengthen sustainability science research capacities, practice transdisciplinary learning, and foster interdisciplinary research, education, and outreach across the continent. The clusters bring together academics and experts from many disciplines, institutions, and areas to collaborate and share responsibility for devising and implementing science-based solutions that are relevant, inclusive, and impactful in the African environment. The Leadership Centre is currently coordinating a consultative process to determine the priority areas and the processes that will involve major sustainability science stakeholders on the continent.
The sustainability science clusters aim to satisfy the Future Earth Africa Hub and Leadership Centre objectives and vision of promoting sustainable science and leadership in Africa through the following:
Sustainability Science Clusters are transdisciplinary communities of practice that are organized around a particular theme and will have the following objectives:
- promote transdisciplinary knowledge (co-) production in sustainability fields relevant to African priorities
- form a core part of the Africa Hub regional node structures, where the cluster is thematic, and the node is geographic.
- Advance Transdisciplinary Sustainability Sciences and practice to strengthen Future Earth Africa Hub science partnerships, contributing to Future Earth Africa Hub Regional Nodes
- Break down silos between subjects and disciplines, practice domains and policy, adopting a transdisciplinary approach that involves diverse stakeholders and points of view in order to co-create knowledge and solutions to African challenges.
- Provide Sustainability Science Leadership that advances Sustainability Science in Africa and connects African Sustainability Sciences to the Future Earth Global Research Networks and other relevant Sustainability Science structures in Africa and internationally.
- Advance the development of knowledge, networks, foundations, and capacity for advancing Sustainability Sciences and practice on the African continent.
