Gilbert Street consists of 11 postgraduate students accommodated in 6 Gilbert Street and the Gilbert Units. 6 Gilbert Street is a house that accommodates 3 students, and the Gilbert Units accommodate 8 students in individual Units. 

Students housed in the Gilbert Units have access to the facilities at 6 Gilbert Street. This includes the laundry, kitchen, and lounge area with a TV. 6 Gilbert Street is located directly across the road from the Gilbert Units. Gilbert Street accommodation is overseen by a Residence Head and one Residence Student Assistant. They are available to attend to any concerns of residents on a regular basis.

Students can connect to Resnet (internet access) in their rooms through WiFi. Printing facilities are also available at 6 Gilbert Street, and printing charges are deducted from each student’s printing balance, which can be viewed online on the Rhodes University Student Support System (ROSS).

The rooms are equipped with: 

• WiFi,
• a single bed and mattress,
• a bedside cupboard,
• a mirror,
• a study table and chair,
• a bookcase,
• a desk lamp,
• a wardrobe,
• a notice board,
• a wall-mounted bar heater,
• a waste paper basket,
• a shower basin,
• a shower mat and 
• a water bucket.
• In addition, you may like to bring items like a pot plant or scatter cushions to make you feel at home.

Linen is provided by Housekeeping: a sheet, a duvet and duvet cover, a blanket, two pillows and two pillowcases & mattress cover. There is a linen change once a week, on Wednesdays from 13:00 to 14:00. Students can bring their own linen, but they are then responsible for the laundering.

Maintenance and cleaning of each residence are attended to by Rhodes Housekeeping staff on a daily basis. Students are expected to maintain order in their personal rooms throughout their stay.  

6 Gilbert Street House

6 Gilbert Street is a double-story, stand-alone house for 3 students. Shared facilities downstairs include a small lounge area. The residents also have a kitchen area equipped with a fridge, stove, microwave, and cupboards. Other shared facilities are a washing machine and a tumble dryer.  

Gilbert Postgraduate Units

The Gilbert Units offer private and convenient accommodation, with access to 6 Gilbert Street, situated directly across the road. The shared facilities are the laundry, kitchen and lounge area. The Gilbert Units consist of eight single rooms, each with an ensuite bathroom.
