Beyond the legal requirements of being required to provide a safe work environment, the University is concerned with the well-being of its staff.  The use of alcohol and illegal drugs at work can put the staff member’s employment at risk. This can have a disastrous impact on the family and community of the staff member concerned.  The use of alcohol and illegal drugs at work can also put other staff, students, service providers and other visitors to the University at risk in terms of their personal safety and property.  The University has a responsibility to ensure that appropriate measures are taken to prevent alcohol and drug abuse at work and where problems do occur, to take appropriate and timely action.  In this regard, managers because of their close relationship with staff are best placed to detect and deal with problems.
