Lesego Rampolokeng

Lesego Rampolokeng is a poet, novelist and playwright, who came to prominence in the 1980s, a turbulent period in South Africa’s history. Born in Orlando West, Soweto, in Johannesburg, he briefly studied law at the University of the North before abandoning it for poetry. The violence and oppression that characterized South Africa during apartheid informed his poetry’s unflinching examination of degradation and oppression. Oral folk traditions and contemporary rap music echo throughout his work, and he often incorporates music into his performances.
His first poetry collection, Horns for Hondo, was published in 1991. This was followed by End Beginnings in 1993, Talking Rain (1993), Rap Master Supreme – Word Bomber in the Extreme (1997), The Bavino Sermons (1999) and more recently, Head on Fire (2012). He is also the author of the novels Blackheart (2004) and  Whiteheart: Prologue to Hysteria (2005). His play, Fanon’s Children, was performed at Cape Town’s Baxter Theater in 2002, and his poetry was incorporated into the Handspring Puppet Company production of Faustus in Africa. He has also written screenplays and released two audio recordings, including a collaboration with the Kalahari Surfers. His documentary film Word Down the Line debuted in 2014.
