The use of toxicity tests with indigenous algal species in water resource management

Student: Ms NP Gola
Supervisor: Dr WJ Muller
Degree: PhD (Water Resource Science)

This study is aimed at isolating and culturing algal species from different South African rivers, in order to identify suitable species to be used in toxicity tests with single substances and complex effluents. The criteria used to select suitable species are; widespread distribution, ability to grow rapidly under laboratory conditions and sensitivity. Sensitivity of selected indigenous algal species to toxicants will be compared to that of the standard toxicity test species Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata.
