New Rhodes students begin their orientation week today

Over 1 400 new students begin an intensive Orientation Week programme that will introduce them to a wide range of academic, cultural and sporting activities at Rhodes University. The students, predominantly first years, will be required to attend talks and workshops lead by Deans, Career and Counselling advisers during orientation week. This is put together by the Office of the Dean of Students.

The Deans will explain how faculties and departments function and what subjects are on offer. These orientation lectures enable students to get a better understanding of different subjects, make informed subject choices and get the best out of their unfolding academic life.

The workshops on social aspects provide students with important information that will help them make responsible choices during their academic years at Rhodes. They explore issues which include coping with stress and depression, alcohol and substance abuse. New students will also find out about the different support programmes available at Rhodes.

Dr Vivian de Klerk, the Dean of Students, says the orientation programme is organised in such a way that “by the end of the week, students should have gained a better understanding of how the University operates, and what other opportunities are available to them, so they can make the very best of their time at Rhodes.”

According to Dr Saleem Badat, Rhodes University Vice-Chancellor, orientation week provides new students with the opportunity to discover the various academic disciplines on offer and helps students choose the courses that excite them and are in line with their aspirations and interests. “Orientation week is also about students familiarising themselves with the activities organised by numerous student societies and sports clubs. Involvement should be seen as an integral part of Rhodes education and is a means of making new friends and acquiring important skills,” said Dr Badat.

This evening (Monday 1 February) Dr Badat and SRC president, Mr Eric Kweku Ofei, will deliver their opening addresses at the 1820 Settlers Monument, after which students, parents and staff will enjoy a Jazz evening at Drostdy Lawns hosted by the SRC.
