Post-grad opportunities at Rhodes

Applications are now open to candidates interested in pursuing Postgraduate studies at Rhodes University in 2011. Next year’s opportunities see some new postgraduate study options and exciting research opportunities being offered.

The Department of Education at Rhodes has called for applications towards Masters, PhD and Post Doctoral studies in Mathematics Education, the central activity being the Mathematics Teacher Enrichment Programme that is framed by a five-year intervention programme.

The programme, which aims to equip teachers with extra mathematical content knowledge and provide them with classroom and teaching support to instil a passion for mathematics in their learners, will enable participants to assume leadership roles in the mathematics community.

The Maths Education programme offers a generous all-inclusive bursary for one or two years to applicants with an honours degree in education with either a specialism or elective in Mathematics education and has some research experience in this field.

The Department of Political and International Studies is offering the newly launched Thinking Africa project which invites young researchers to join a team of experienced scholars who will be working on the following three research projects in 2011: Ubuntu, Poverty and Privilege and The Mind of the Oppressed.
Thinking Africa is a teaching-led research project which aims to foster the next generation of South African researchers through encouraging Honours, Masters and PhD students to engage with and participate in the research projects of more experienced scholars. The emphasis is on original, ground-breaking research and collaborative publication where possible.

The department also offers a one-year Diploma in International Studies on African Diplomacy and Peacekeeping open to students with a first Degree, not necessarily in Politics.

Perhaps the most unique Postgraduate opportunity is the study programme bursaries offered by the Department of African Language Studies which has made strides towards being the strongest offering in the country towards BA honours and Masters in Linguistics and Language Practice.

Rhodes recognises the need for, and intends to produce graduates of excellent quality in languages, particularly African Languages. Students are invited to register for innovative and relevant structured part-time and full-time Honours degree courses which are related to Applied Language Studies such as Translation Studies. The value of the award is R60 000 per annum.
