A truly thrilling collaboration is unfolding between Jori Snell of Baba Yaga Theatre and Ubom! drama company in an enchanting and enthralling theatrical universe.
Both recipients of the Silver Standard Bank Ovation Awards for their National Arts Festival 2010 productions, ‘Inua’ by Baba Yaga Theatre, in Physical Theatre, and ‘BREED’ by Ubom! in the Theatre category.
Jori Snell, originally from Denmark, has travelled the world, but finds a home in South Africa for now, having worked in Cape Town for the past three years. She established Baba Yaga Theatre in 2004 and is a freelance physical performing-artist and dancer in Holland and Denmark. She was educated at InstitutetförScenkonst in Italy and Nordisk Teaterskole in Denmark, and is now based in South Africa.
Snell has worked as a dancer/performer for Corona la Balance (State Ensemble for Children & Youth Theatre in Denmark), Panthéâtre, Roy Hart Theatre (France), Odin Teatret (Denmark) and FTH:K (South Africa). She now finds herself working with Ubom!, creating a fascinating, original work set to play this year at the National Arts Festival and the OUT THE BOX festival in September in Cape Town.

Snell describes how it is through transformation that an awareness of what is real, ‘the essence or true nature’, is born” (Daniella Potter on Cue online, July 2010). In 2011 something spectacular launches at the Rhodes University Box Theatre with the two companies coming together to create ‘Door’. Maintaining classical Ubom! levels of quality, quirk and depth, the collaboration with Snell not only adds but evolves performance to new heights creating a fresh and innovative approach. ‘Door’ is a highly paced physical work bursting at the seams in humour, risk and intense galvanisation. Told through living tableaux, a labyrinth of strange events and characters, Door reveals a hysterical and uproarious scrutiny of secrets.
This is the story of a Door.
In front of the door stands the Doorkeeper.
He guards the passage and holds the key.
