Celebrity Rhodes Graduate to Judge Idols 2011

Well known radio and television personality and Rhodes graduate, Unathi Msengana, was selected to join the panel of judges on the popular reality singing contest, M-Net Idols.

The Metro FM DJ replaces singer Mara Louw on the seventh season of the show. She will be joining Randall Abrahams and Gareth Cliff on the panel. According to Idols publicity manager, Lani Lombard, Msengana is well-versed on South African popular culture and possesses “an exceptional music industry knowledge”.

No stranger to the limelight, Msengane has performed alongside artists such as Youssou Ndou, John Legend and Seal. In February 2010 she paid homage to Grahamstown in a performance at the Guy Butler Theatre.

Msengana studied Drama with Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes. She was born in Grahamstown and later moved to Johannesburg to further her career in the entertainment industry.

In December 2003 and 2004, she was voted one of 10 most influential people in the arts by the Star Newspaper. Msengana was also voted among the top 10 women in media in the MTN Women in Media Awards.

The singer’s reply to being asked how she felt about replacing Louw was “I could never say I’m filling Mam Mara’s shoes…I’m just blessed that she’s passed on the baton to me”.

Asked by TimesLive what she was looking forward to the most, Msenagana said “I absolutely love music, I absolutely love people. I can’t wait to experience an abundance of both.”
