Marikana Commission evidence leader Advocate Mbuyiseli Madlanga has been appointed as the new Judge in the Constitutional Court.
President Jacob Zuma announced Madlanga’s appointment this afternoon.
"I congratulate Advocate Madlanga SC on this appointment and wish him all the best in this new role of promoting constitutional justice in our country.
We also acknowledge and thank all the highly capably candidates who were shortlisted for this position," said President Zuma.
He will assume his position in August this year.
Madlanga replaces Justice Zak Yacoob who retired at the end of last year.
Madlanga obtained a B Juris Degree from the University of Transkei in 1983. He also studied at Rhodes University and the University of Notre Dame South Bend in the US.
He worked as a lecturer at the University of Transkei, a high court judge and acted in the Supreme Court of Appeals and the Constitutional Court before going to open his own practice in 2001.
He has also appeared on behalf of South Africa in the International Court of Justice at The Hague, in the matter of the “Separation Wall constructed by the Israel on Occupied Palestinian Territory”.
