Rhodes University Political and International Studies Department will hosts the 10th annual Teach-In from 23 July to 27 July. Prominent speakers will gather in Grahamstown to debate the “Second Transition” which was recently proposed by the ruling party, African National Congress.
“The purpose of the Teach-In is to consider an issue of public concern which will touch the future careers and lives of all Rhodes students. It plays a vital role in interrogating public issues,” said Political and International Studies lecturer and Teach-In organiser, Mr Richard Pithouse.
“These lectures bring a particular issue of interest and concern in the public sphere to the attention of the University and the wider community,” he added.
Ms Mandy Rossouw, will kick-start the sessions on Monday and the title of her lecture is When a second transition has nowhere to go - Exploring the gamble president Jacob Zuma took at the ANC's policy conference.
The following day, Mr Joel Netshitenzhe will present his lecture entitled Can South Africans forge a social compact for higher growth and development?. This will be followed by Dr Catherine Burns’ lecture, titled Digging Down into the Second Transition, on Wednesday.
On Thursday, Prof Steven Friedman will present a lecture entitled The Fault Lies Not in Our Transition But in Ourselves: The Second Transition and the Deflection of Responsibility.
Prof Pierre de Vos will wrap the 2012 Teach-In with a legal viewpoint in a lecture entitled 'Don't touch me on my policy!': the role of the judiciary in the economic transition of South Africa.
Ms Verashni Pillay, Deputy Editor of the Mail & Guardian online, will be the discussant for all the lectures.
This year’s Teach-In will take place during lunch time at the Barratt lecture theatre.
