Rhodes University Political and International Studies Department will host International Relations (IR) conference on 27-28 May 2013 at Continuing Education Conference Centre.
The theme of the conference, first mooted by our Visiting Nelson Mandela Professor Amitav Acharya, is “African Voices in the New IR Theory” to set out to investigate what the reasons for Africa’s marginalization in IR discipline and theory are and how this issue can be addressed.
The keynote speaker for the conference is Andrew Hurrell who is Montague Burton Professor of International Relations at Oxford University and a Fellow of Balliol College.
Mwesiga Baregu of the School of Graduate Studies, St. Augustine University of Tanzania, Dar-es-Salaam will be a discussant.
“We have organised the conference programme into seven chaired panels with either two or three presenters addressing the following themes: The State of IR and Africa, Revisiting Africa’s Marginality, Regionalism and Beyond, Power and Security, Sovereignty and Security, Ethnicity and the Military and Possibilities and Limits of African Agency,” says Head of Department, Professor Paul-Henri Bischoff.
