Lengthy water outages in Grahamstown have galvanised Rhodes University staff, students and residents to march to City Hall today to protest dry taps in high lying areas.
Although 11 campus residences have been left high and dry for the past eight days things are a lot worse in higher lying areas where residents and businesses claim to have had no water for almost two weeks.
According to an e-mail sent by dean of students Dr Vivian de Klerk to all staff and students yesterday, the lunchtime march would be led by vice-chancellor Dr Saleem Badat and other top university staff “to express our outrage and strong dissatisfaction at the ongoing water outage”.
University leaders will also hand over a formal public statement to Makana municipal officials at the city hall.
The eight-day water outage at 11 residences has proved expensive for Rhodes.
It has had to supply 880 affected students with two litres of bottled water daily.
Attempts to reach municipal spokesman Mncedisi Boma for comment proved fruitless yesterday.
