Rhodes University in collaboration with the Economics Society of South Africa presents a public lecture by Moeletsi Mbeki on Economic Transformation, Economic Freedom and the role of African Capitalism, at Rhodes University on Tuesday, 19 September at 18h00 at the General Lecture Theatre.
Mbeki an author and political economist has recently made damning statements around the recent outbursts against white monopoly capital, the Guptas capital, increasing inequality, surging land invasions, movements of radical economic transformation and service delivery.
Most recently, he publicly denied the existence of white monopoly capital and has called for the drastic cutting of government salaries towards radical economic transformation. His controversial stance on such critical matters has necessitated an intellectual discussion around his work on African capitalism, economic transformational and freedom issues.
The Rhodes University Economics Student Society (RUESS) is a new student organisation that aims to develop economics students beyond assessed curriculum and make them active citizens of the country and continent.
“The University’s mission is to generate and disseminate knowledge to challenge the various economic ideologies, including those relating to economic freedom. It is of utmost importance that future leaders be exposed to a wide range of philosophies, especially African ones,” said project coordinator for RUESS, Nhlakanipho Dlamini.Source: Communications
