Rhodes University condemns the ongoing atrocities of the Israeli government against the people of Gaza. The relentless bombardment, the destruction of homes, schools, universities and other tertiary institutions, hospitals, and vital infrastructure, and the deliberate deprivation of food, water, electricity and medical aid are unconscionable crimes against humanity.

We are horrified by the scale of death and suffering inflicted upon a besieged civilian population. The systematic targeting and displacement of Palestinians cannot be excused as self-defence but is the perpetuation of a decades-long system of occupation, apartheid and dispossession.

We extend our heartfelt sorrow to all who have suffered, Palestinians and Israelis alike.

As an institution committed to critical thought and human dignity, we believe that moral clarity and intellectual honesty must be exercised in resolving conflict. It is our responsibility to call out actions that contravene international law and humanitarian principles and there is now an urgency in seeking a just, equitable, and lasting peace which is anchored in the rights, security, and dignity of all.

Rhodes University urgently calls for

  • An immediate ceasefire and end to hostilities
  • The release of those held by both HAMAS and the IDF
  • Full and unhindered humanitarian access to affected populations
  • Accountability and adherence to international law
  • Renewed and inclusive efforts by the international community toward a resolution that honours human rights and mutual recognition.

Academic institutions must both educate and empathize, taking action with critical analysis, structured reasoning, and a profound respect for human life. At times such as these, we are reminded that true leadership is service, not only through ideas but through the restoration of justice and the dignity of all.
