The official opening of the Oppidan Bus Shelter and common room marks a significant achievement, realised as a legacy project by the Student Representative Council (SRC) of Rhodes University. The development of the bus shelter was initiated to establish a safe, on-campus environment for Oppidan students, providing them with a secure place to wait for their transport and the Oppi bus to take them home.
Oppidan students constitute a large portion of the Rhodes University student body. Historically, they have often felt overlooked and disconnected from the wider student community, sometimes referring to themselves as the ‘forgotten stepchild’. The construction of these new structures not only represents a positive step in alignment with the institution’s Integrated Development Plans (IDPs), but also demonstrates the commitment of both the SRC and the Division of Student Affairs (DSSD) to the student body.
Strategically located at the entrance of the Steve Biko building, the bus shelter was built in response to a clearly identified need. According to Miss Putuma Balintulo, the 2023 Vice-President, the idea for the bus shelter originated from the recognition that off-campus students often travel long distances and have to endure lengthy waits for the bus. During these waits, they are exposed to various weather elements, including wind, rain, and intense sun. The project's goal is to create a secure place that protects them from these conditions. Miss Balintulo also acknowledged that while this was an SRC project, its success was the result of collaborative efforts, not just the SRC's.
Dr Pakiso Tondi, the Director of the DSSD, expressed his excitement about the new facilities, describing them as a “living and learning space” that affirms the University's commitment to its students and to enriching student life. He also noted that the common room is a step towards creating a Rhodes University student hub. The common room is specifically designed to provide a communal space and a central point for the Oppidan community. It also offers proximity to the Oppidan Committee.
The Oppidan common room is equipped with several amenities, including a microwave, television, couches, and desks for studying. It is intended to be a versatile space, suitable for students who need to study between classes or simply wish to relax. Abongile Bambiso, an Oppidan student, shared his appreciation for the Oppidan experience and the sense of community it provides. He stated that the common room is an important space he uses daily.
The new Oppidan common room and bus shelter are widely seen as essential facilities that serve the student body. Whether a student needs a place to wait for the Oppidan bus in the evening or a spot to spend time between lectures, these spaces are designed to fulfil that purpose.
