The annual Postgraduate Student Cocktail function took place on 7 November 2019 in honour of 77 outstanding postgraduate students at Rhodes University.
This function aims to celebrate the achievements of postgraduate students at Rhodes University, as well as to acknowledge the contributions they have made towards academic research.
Last year, just over 30 postgraduates were honoured whereas this year, the number more than doubled to 77.
Heads and supervisors within their department who believe a particular student deserves recognition for their contributions to excellent research or special achievements nominate students. Rhodes University Vice-Chancellor, Dr Sizwe Mabizela, paid homage to the Research Office led by Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Dr Peter Clayton. He said, “We would not be here to celebrate these outstanding postgraduate students had it not been for the incredible role played by all the people in your division.”
Dr Mabizela congratulated a number of students for publishing accredited journal papers and making a major contribution to a co-authored paper in an accredited journal. Many students have also published in high impact journals including, Electrochimica Acta, Pharmaceutics, Dyes and Pigments, Ecology and Society, Freshwater Biology and Molecules.
The Vice-Chancellor concluded the function by speaking about the importance of students using their own research to change society. He said, “Through our individual and collective efforts, we can witness an emergence of a different and a better society, a different and a better world.”
