Qhawekazi Hlaba’s journey to Rhodes University is a story of determination, resilience, and the transformative power of opportunity. Born in Dutywa, Eastern Cape, she received her early schooling at Ntaba Maria, which laid the foundation for a journey that would ultimately bring her to one of the country’s most prestigious universities.

For Qhawekazi, high school was a mixture of steady progress and sudden challenges. She recalled that “the other grades were not that hard, but when I got to grade 11, things started to become shaky.” Academic hurdles, particularly in her later grades, tested her resolve. Yet, through focus and dedication, she completed her matric year in 2024. Her experience highlights the importance of preparatory programmes in nurturing potential; without support, she believes she might not have been ready for university-level study.

In 2025, Qhawekazi enrolled at GADRA, upgrading her mathematics and solidifying her academic foundation. She described the experience positively, noting that “the classes were excellent. I attended all the classes. The people were nice, the teachers were patient, and they understood me.” It was here that her academic confidence began to grow, demonstrating the value of tailored educational support in preparing students for higher education. The programme not only strengthened her skills but also cultivated a sense of personal resilience and commitment, which proved vital in her transition to university life.

Rhodes University represented both an aspiration and a challenge for Qhawekazi. She had initially thought that the university was not a place for students from township backgrounds. She explained, “I always thought Rhodes was not for Black kids who live in the township. But now that I'm here, I'm seeing diversity, and I feel welcome.” Her words reflect the subtle but powerful role that representation and inclusion play in shaping a student’s sense of belonging. Rhodes’ research and initiatives to broaden access have created pathways for students like Qhawekazi to thrive.

Her motivation extends beyond personal success. Qhawekazi is driven by a deep sense of purpose, both for herself and her family. She stated, “Not to fail myself and not to fail my family.” This determination is intertwined with her academic ambitions and plans; she intends to pursue a career in teaching, following in her mother's footsteps, who also studied at Rhodes. The drive to make a meaningful contribution is further inspired by her late brother, who was pursuing an LLB at the university before his untimely passing. She hopes to honour his memory by achieving what he could not, underlining how personal dedication can intersect with broader societal contributions.

The story of Qhawekazi is also a testament to the ripple effects of Rhodes’ research and educational programmes. By supporting students from diverse backgrounds, the university contributes not only to individual success but also to the social good.
