Rhodes University has once again emerged as a creative powerhouse at the 2025 National Arts Festival - walking away with two Silver Ovation Awards and securing its place among the most compelling voices on the national Fringe stage.

The critically acclaimed A Childhood in Chalk - a moving collaboration between the Drama Department and the Faculty of Education - captured hearts and headlines. Set in Fingo Village during the school boycotts of the 1970s, the production channels history through the eyes of children. Raw, poetic and politically charged, it resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike.

Sharing the spotlight was s’il vous plait - a seductive cabaret by music lecturer Garreth Robertson and performer Mistress Mae Aisitahn-Yafais. With brassy vocals, nostalgic storytelling, and the sharpest of wit, the show delivered an unforgettable performance that sparkled with theatrical flair. The duo's daring and precision secured their place among the Festival’s top acts.

“The Fringe was packed with new ideas and new themes,” said Zikhona Monaheng, NAF Associate Producer. “A lot of work asked deep questions about family, values and how to show up in a challenging world.”

These two Silver Ovation Awards were not Rhodes University’s only recognition. Ndingekafi: Whispers of Redemption - performed by the Kwantu Choir, which includes current and former Rhodes University students - received a Bronze Ovation Award. This choral reflection on legacy, mortality and spiritual renewal brought together powerful vocals and emotional depth, underlining the impact of community-driven performance.

Further recognition came in the form of Liminal, choreographed by Nicole Joka, owner and lead teacher at Prestige School of Dance and a proud Rhodes University alumna. This contemporary dance piece earned an Ovation Award during the Festival, marking Joka’s place among the year’s most exciting movement artists.

The Ovation Awards are a signature element of the Festival, honouring productions that move audiences, spark conversation, and display technical and creative excellence. For Rhodes University, the accolades are more than trophies – they are a reflection of the University's dynamic teaching, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and commitment to the arts as public engagement.

As the curtain falls on this year’s Festival, Rhodes University stands tall not just as a participant but as a leading force in shaping South Africa’s creative future.
