Dr Nomalanga Mashinini is a University of Pretoria alumnus from Klerksdorp, the City of Matlosana. Her academic journey started when she enrolled for a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree at the University of Pretoria in 2011 and subsequently registered for a Coursework Master of Laws (LLM) degree in Mercantile Law at the University of Pretoria. She has worked as a Senior Library Assistant at the OR Tambo Law Library and she was an Assistant Lecturer in the Mercantile Law Department of the University of Pretoria from 2016 to 2017, respectively. Dr Mashinini joined the Rhodes University Faculty of Law in October 2017, where she lectures Law of Persons, Company Law and Commercial Law.

Dr Mashinini is currently a senior lecturer, a position which she was promoted to on 1 January 2022. She completed her Doctor of Laws (LLD) degree in 2021, titled "The Recognition of Image Rights in the Context of Memes Shared on Social Media". She has an emerging academic profile, with her research interests focused on Image Rights, Social Media Law and Artificial Intelligence Law.

Dr Mashinini has frequently presented at international conferences such as: 

  • 15th WIPO-WTO Colloquium for Teachers of Intellectual Property Law at the World Trade Organisation and World Intellectual Property Organisation, Geneva, Switzerland (2018),
  • 8th Annual Internet Law Works-in-Progress Conference, New York, United States of America (2018), 
  • 16th International Conference on Cyber Warfare and Security, Cookeville, Tennessee, United States of America (2021), and
  • 3rd Annual European Conference on the Impact of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Lisbon, Portugal (2021).

Dr Mashinini is also involved in improving the lives of community members and learning from them through sustainable community engagement relationships. She is the podcast host of the show ‘Image Rights by N Mashinini’, a registered director of Inkululeko (Freedom Through Education NPC), a Golden Key Southern Africa Honorary Member (2021) and a recepient of Academic Honorary Colours, Doctor of Laws from the University of Pretoria's Student Representative Council (2022).
