On graduating from Rhodes, Les Roberts joined the Department of Justice as a prosecutor, starting at the Magistrate's Court in Johannesburg. He rose through the ranks, took silk in 1980, and eventually became Attorney-General (now called Director of Public Prosecutions) of the Eastern Cape Division of the High Court in 1993. He retired at the end of 2001. After lecturing at Rhodes on a part-time basis, he was appointed to the staff as Senior Lecturer in 2005. His fields of interest are criminal procedure, the law of evidence and criminal law (especially fraud and corruption). Outside interests: music (plays clarinet in the Rhodes Orchestra), reading, art.
