On 18th and 19th March 2014 Catch-Up learners participated in two Maths Relay Quizzes at Khutliso Daniels Secondary School and Kuyasa Combined School. At each event four teams of 5 learners competed in a fun competition that tested their Mathematical abilities, strategy and team work.
The Catch-Up teachers ran the events with guidance from staff of the FRF Mathematics Education Chair. The event saw the teams of learners rushing to answer questions in three levels of difficulty. They named their teams and were enthusiastic and empassioned by the will to win. Prizes included chocolates, stationary and mathematical implements such as calculators and maths sets. All participants received a commemorative T Shirt to inspire their peers. The design on the T Shirt is derived from the Theorem of Pythagoras. It is a tree constructed of triangles and squares in which the square of the hypotenuse in each case is equal in area to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.
The winners of the coastal competition were the team "Sohcahtoa" from Nompucuko lead by their teacher Mr Freek van Rooyen and the team comprising Sinovuyo Mzimba, Ada Mbophane, Malibongwe Mambu, Sinesipho Makasi and Siseko Tyukana.
The Grahamstown competition was won by the home team "Creative Minds" from Khutliso Daniels.
