The cicadas of southern Africa are currently classified into one family, Cicadidae, and two subfamilies that are sometimes treated as families. The Cicadinae of South Africa have not been systematically revised since the publication of Distant's Insecta Transvalensia (Distant, 1906). Distant recognized 14 species in the northern parts of the country alone. The expedition of the Lund University Museum in 1950-1951 encountered only six species, all of them already described (Izzard, 1958). More recent work has increased the known fauna to over 40 species and recognized eight new genera, many of them endemic. The geographical distributions and biology of many of the species have also become better known.
The Tibicininae of southern Africa have not been systematically revised since the publication of Distant's Insecta Transvalensia (Distant, 1906). Distant catalogued 13 species from the Transvaal (now Mpumalanga, Gauteng, Northern Province and parts of Northwest Province). Only eight South African species were encountered during the expedition of the Lund University Museum in 1950-1951, and no new taxa were represented (Izzard, 1958). Recent work has increased the known fauna substantially, and added two new endemic genera. There is a high rate of endemism at the generic level.
The abridged lists of synonyms given below follow Metcalf (1963) and Duffels and van der Laan (1985), as revised by Villet (1989a, 1989b, 1994), and work in this direction is continuing. Several changes to the synonymy that are in the process of being published can be obtained by e-mailing the author. The months of activity of the adults are given only as guidelines because southern African cicadas tend to emerge later at more southerly latitudes, and may not emerge in significant numbers until seasonal rain has fallen.
