The termites of South Africa are currently classified into five families. However, some extensive changes to this arrangement are likely as a result of cladistic analyses, and a number of the current subfamilies are likely to be promoted to family status. Termites are the speciality of Viv Uys, at the Biosystematics Division, Plant Protection Research Institute, Agricultural Research Council, P. Bag X134, Pretoria, 0001 South Africa.
