INTRODUCTION

The Vepidae are currently represented by four subfamilies in South Africa, including the German hornet Vespula germanica, which was accidentally introduced to Cape Town recently. The phylogeny of the group based on cladistic analysis has been investigated by Carpenter (J.M. 1982. The Phylogenetic Relationships and Natural Classification of the Vespoidea (Hymenoptera). Systematic Entomology 7: 11-38).

The present list includes only the southern African taxa. For a list of species of Masarinae of the world described up to March 1994 see Gess, S.K. (1996).
