String Ensemble

The Rhodes University String Ensemble is made up of both music and non-music students who play any of the orchestral string instruments. The string ensemble rehearses one evening per week in the Nun’s Chapel throughout the year.

IMS students are assessed throughout the year by the ensemble coach Mr Lwazi Mkula (formative assessment) and once at the end of each semester by a panel of examiners (summative assessment). The mid-year assessment allows for the students to be assessed at an individual level to ensure that development occurs.

In the second semester, the string players join the Rhodes University Orchestra for the annual Gala concert. Students collaborate with professional and amateur players from other Universities for this performance.
