Welcome Message from Student Affairs

Dear student,

Congratulations on your admission to Rhodes University. You are now part of the Rhodes University community. The Division of Student Affairs wants to ensure that your journey is seamless, that you grow, and most importantly, that you succeed academically. This new stage of your life can be daunting and exciting as you adjust to a new cultural, social, and academic environment. During this time of adjustment and transition, we are here to support you on your academic journey.

You join the University at a time when the world is facing the COVID-19 pandemic. The health, wellbeing and safety of our students and staff is of paramount importance. As a University, we have health and safety guidelines in place that align with national COVID- 19 regulations. Slowing the transmission of the virus is our individual and collective responsibility. We encourage you to familiarise yourself with all Rhodes University COVID-19 health and safety guidelines. Remember to follow all non-pharmaceutical preventive measures: Always wear a mask in public spaces, maintain a distance of 1, 5 m from the nearest person, wash or sanitise your hands regularly, screen for COVID-19 symptoms daily with the Higher Health App.

The Division offers a wide range of new experiences outside of the classroom. Through the various offerings of the Division, the University seeks to ensure the holistic development of our students. We wish to create an opportunity for growth and development in support of the academic project. We invite students to take advantage of our services designed to ensure ethical leadership, responsible citizenship, and academic success. Specifically, we offer a wide range of services for a holistic and enriching student experience. These life-changing opportunities are located with three sections that constitute the Division of Student Affairs: Wellness Section, Sports Administration, and Student Services. This guide aims to introduce you to the services offered by these three sections.

Humiliating initiation practises are prohibited at Rhodes University. The University condemns acts of harassment (sexual or otherwise), including bullying, belittling, shaming, intimidating or humiliating others, and all forms of demeaning behaviour. The University will take swift action against individuals or groups who do not adhere to the spirit of respect inherent in all orientation programmes.

Whenever you are in distress and do not know where to turn, please contact the Division of Student Affairs Office. We are here to listen, refer, guide and support you.
