Biography

Dr Brown was originally educated as a mathematician, but while a lecturer at Rhodes University, he became interested in the difficulties students experienced when learning mathematics. To inform this, he studied the psychology of thinking and learning, particularly in relation to mathematics. He them moved to work at RUMEP (Rhodes University Mathematics Education Project), working in Inservice teacher education with both Primary and Secondary Mathematics teachers. After 7 years of experience in RUMEP, he was appointed as a lecturer in the Rhodes University Department of Education. He currently serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Primary and Early Chidhood Education. Dr Brown's main interest is in Mathematical Thinking, in particular, how an individual takes agency to engage with their world in Mathematical ways. He draws on ideas of mathematical structuring, the structuring of attention, and mathematican reasoning, to develop systems models of Mathematical Thinking and of how people learn to think Mathematically.
