The Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework indicates that the ability to supervise is an outcome of doctoral study. This seems to assume that one can supervise postgraduate research simply on the basis of having been supervised. But postgraduate supervision is a complex pedagogy and support and development in this area are key to professional practice. The Strengthening Doctoral Supervision course offers an opportunity to reflect on the multiple issues involved in postgraduate supervision in a structured and supportive environment.
The course has been developed by Rhodes University in conjunction with 3 other South African and 3 Dutch universities. The course was offered at Rhodes University in 2013 and will be offered again in 2014 as follows:
Phase 1 - 3 days face-to-face - 5 to 7 May
Phase 2 - online on RUConnected (weekly tasks)
Phase 3 - 3 days face-to-face - 23 to 25 June
The course is offered as as an 30 credit short course and all those who successfully complete the assessment will receive a certificate to this effect. It also functions as an elective module for the Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education.
You can find out more about the course at: doctoralsupervision.net
The course is open to all Rhodes University staff and PhD scholars. Please email Nomfundo Siqwede at n.siqwede@ru.ac.za if you would like to book a place on the course.
