The Rhodes University Ethical Standards Committee (RUESC) is registered with the National Health Research Ethics Council (Registration Number REC-241114-045) and reviews research proposals and ethical standards protocols in accordance with national policy and guidelines to ensure that all teaching and research activities involving humans or animals are performed responsibly and meet the highest ethical standards. Any research and class projects in which humans or animals are involved must have prior clearance from the committee.
Please ensure that your protocol is in line with South African law, national research ethics guidelines, and RU research ethics policy. Submissions that undermine these provisions cannot be approved.
RUESC reviews Rhodes University student research projects and Rhodes University staff research projects. We do not review research undertaken by staff and students from other institutions. If you are a student or a member of staff at another university, then please obtain ethics clearance from that university. If you are a member of staff at Rhodes University but are doing research for a degree for which you have registered at another university then you will have to obtain ethics clearance from that university.
