Nontobeko Ntombela,PHD (2014 to present)


Nontobeko Ntombela holds a BAFA from the Durban University of Technology and a National Certificate in Arts and Culture Management. She worked as the Curator of the contemporary collection at the Johannesburg Art Gallery and received a MFA in Curatorial Studies from Wits University. Ntombela has been a curator of the Durban Institute of Technology Art Gallery, the Project Liaison Officer for Amafa/Heritage AkwaZulu-Natali public sculpture project and also a curator for the BAT Centre. Her curatorial projects include: A Fragile Archiveat Johannesburg Art Gallery (JAG) (2012); being a guest curator for the MTN New Contemporaries (2010); Layers (2010) at the Goodman Gallery project space, Johannesburg; Modern Fabrics at the Bag Factory, Johannesburg (2008); From Here to There at the Association of Visual Arts (AVA) in Cape Town, 2007 as part of the CAPE 07 fringe. Ntombela has participated in the following international programs: the Bilateral Exchange Project between Germany and South Africa (2007), and the Close Connections (Africa Reflected) Curator’s Workshop in Amsterdam (2009). She has been a member of the Visual Arts Network of South Africa Committee (VANSA) since 2008.  She has also previously served on the Arts for Human Rights Trust Board, KwaZulu Natal Society of Arts KZNSA, the African Art Centre, and the Art, Culture and Tourism, Department Cultural Board. Nontobeko began her PhD at Rhodes University in 2014, and her PhD supervisor is Prof Ruth Simbao.
