Social Cohesion

Social Cohesion creates spaces where individuals feel connected, valued, and empowered to participate fully in all aspects of society. Achieving this goal requires a multifaceted approach that addresses inequality, discrimination, and exclusion, and promotes inclusivity, diversity, and respect for human rights. Social Cohesion involves unified and integrated communities, where individuals from diverse backgrounds feel a sense of belonging, mutual respect, and common purpose.

Achieving social cohesion involves creating conditions where all individuals can participate fully in society, regardless of their socio-economic status, race, ethnicity, or gender, by addressing inequality, social exclusion, and discrimination, and promoting inclusivity, diversity, and respect for human rights. By fostering a sense of community and belonging, it is possible to promote social cohesion and reduce feelings of isolation and alienation.

Furthermore, creating policies and programs that ensure that all individuals have equal access to opportunities, resources, and services, and that they are treated with dignity and respect. By promoting social inclusion and reducing discrimination, it makes it possible to build a more just and equitable society, where all individuals can thrive. Opportunities for individuals from diverse backgrounds to interact with each other, learn from each other, and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of different cultures and perspectives also furthers this goal.

Partnerships

Partnerships are used to establish collaborative relationships between institutions, organisations, and stakeholders to achieve shared goals. Multi-stakeholder participatory partnerships are encouraged for the sharing of knowledge resources. This involves creating opportunities for stakeholders to share knowledge, expertise, and resources to support the achievement of the SDGs. Further establishing and maintaining  global partnerships can increase mobility and capacity. This involves creating opportunities for global collaboration to increase mobility and capacity, particularly in developing countries. Mutually beneficial partnerships between institutions, NGOs, and local governments can further contribute to achieving this goal by working together towards shared goals.

Ensuring that education research through the promotion of knowledge co-creation and a focus on the context further involves creating opportunities for knowledge co-creation between researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders to ensure that research is relevant and applicable to real-world situations.  New knowledge should be shared through building local and global communities of practice that seek to answer and respond to global challenges.

The role of Universities as institutions that work for the public good through reciprocal learning relationships can be foregrounded. This involves creating opportunities for universities to engage with communities and stakeholders in mutually beneficial learning relationships to promote the public good. By establishing partnerships, it is possible to leverage the expertise and resources of multiple stakeholders towards achieving the SDGs and promoting the public good.

Shared Spaces

Shared Spaces aims to create spaces for dialogue, collaboration, community participation, and healing, as well as to promote sharing of public spaces across race, class, and gender. This involves creating spaces that facilitate knowledge sharing and collaboration, where people from different backgrounds can come together to discuss and address issues in their communities. Such spaces also provide opportunities for healing and reconciliation, especially in communities that have experienced conflict or trauma.

Shared spaces also aim to promote inclusivity and social cohesion by providing opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to share public spaces, such as parks, streets, and community centres. By creating such spaces and promoting their use, it is possible to foster greater understanding, respect, and unity among different groups, leading to stronger and more resilient communities.
