Michael Jana is a Lecturer in the Department of Political Studies at University of the Witwatersrand. He joined the Department in 2017. From 2005 to early 2017, Michael was an Associate Lecturer and later Lecturer in the Department of Political and Administrative Studies at Chancellor College, University of Malawi. Michael has been involved in research and training at Sol Plaatje Institute for Media Leadership, Rhodes University since 2014. His research areas of interest include social change and development; public policy and political economy analysis; comparative / cross-national study of democracy and democratization in Africa; political legitimacy of emerging African democracies; and state-society relations. Michael has over 13 years’ experience conducting, coordinating and teaching social research in over 17 developing countries in Southern and West Africa, and the Middle East. This research has culminated in publications in international peer reviewed journals, book chapters, and conference papers, and has informed numerous social change programmes. Michael has also used the research findings and experience in the field of Development to develop strategies, manuals and toolkits on Social Research and Social Change for such international and regional organizations as UNICEF, Oxfam, Save the Children International, and Soul City Institute for Social Justice. These manuals and tools are used by numerous civil society organizations and individuals in Africa and the Middle East.
