NEW SRC ELECTIONS IN 4TH TERM

Dear fellow students,

The past SRC election has ended in a failure to reach quorum, which is 33.3% of full-time registered students - as contemplated by Article 9.1.10.2. of the Students' Constitution, as amended. A failure to reach quorum can be seen to be effectively a vote of no confidence in the present candidates running. According to the Higher Education Act, however, every university must have a SRC. The effect of this failure to reach quorum is then that the elections must commence a new, as contemplated by Article 9.1.10.3. of the Students' Constitution, as amended, starting with the opening of nominations again. All former nominations and voting counts are thereby nullified, and all presently running candidates must re-submit their nominations if they elect to run again. The eligibility for running is once again now open to all students, subject to the provisions related to particular portfolios and limitations imposed by the Students' Constitution - see Schedule 6 and Article 9.1.2. of our Constitution, respectively. The provisional closing date for nominations is the 10th of September, 2010, at noon.

Nomination forms may be collected from the SRC liaisons office and must be returned to him before the closing date. Dates of the election general student body meeting, and the elections themselves, will be communicated once those dates are finalised. The appointed impartial officer for these elections is Adv Leslie Roberts SC of the Rhodes Law School. If you have any further questions please do not hesitate in contacting Mr Mark Addison BA LLB, SRC Liaison, and myself, incumbent SRC VPE and present electoral officer. Thank you for your patience, and good luck to all students that will be running.

Regards,

George IB Kahn
SRC Vice President External - 2009/2010
