RHODES University postgraduate student Yanda Bango is a national finalist in the Miss Commonwealth South Africa 2014 pageant.

Bango said she entered the competition because she is passionate about youth development and an underlying principle of the pageant is to empower young women to become ambassadors of change and positively contribute to the country's development.

The 23-year-old's development studies master's thesis focuses on youth participation, empowerment and the role that education plays in one's life.

The Miss Commonwealth pageant will be held at Gold Reef City in Johannesburg on August 29. Among the pageant's objectives is to raise funds for charitable causes.

Yanda will raise funds for the Ikageng Aids Ministry, a community-based organisation that cares for orphaned and vulnerable children through education, health and nutrition.

"Ikageng aims to improve the quality of life of children and it focuses on creating a safe environment for these children where ubuntu is the most highly regarded value," said Yanda.

Companies or individuals who wish to support Bango's charitable fundraising can obtain more information from her directly at or visit her Facebook page.
