Configure Microsoft Outlook Express

 

  • Open Microsoft Outlook Express
  • Click on 'Tools' and then 'Accounts...'

 

  • The 'Internet Accounts' window will appear
  • Click on 'Add >' and then 'Mail...'
  • The 'Internet Connection Wizard' window will appear
  • Enter you name (e.g., Joe Bloggs) in the 'Display name:' field
  • Click 'Next >'
  • Enter your e-mail address in the 'E-mail address:' (e.g., g05z9999@campus.ru.ac.za) field
  • Click 'Next >'
  • Change the incoming mail server to 'IMAP'
  • Enter 'imap.ru.ac.za' in the 'Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server:' field
  • Enter 'mail.ru.ac.za' in the 'Outgoing mail (SMTP) server:' field
  • Click 'Next >'
  • Enter you Rhodes username (e.g., g05z9999) in the in the 'Account name:' field
  • Enter your Rhodes password in the 'Password:' field
  • Click 'Next >'
  • Click 'Finish'
  • On the 'Internet Accounts' window, select the newly added mail account. This should be 'imap.ru.ac.za'
  • Click 'Properties'
  • The 'imap.ru.ac.za Properties' window is displayed
  • Select the 'Servers' tab
  • Under the 'Outgoing Mail Server' section, make sure that the check box next to 'My server requires authentication' is selected
  • Select the 'Advanced' tab
  • Under the 'Server Port Numbers' section, make sure that both tick boxes next to 'This server requires a secure connection (SSL)' are selected
  • Enter '465' in the 'Outgoing mail (SMTP):' field
  • Enter '993' in the 'Incoming server (IMAP):' field
  • Click 'OK'
  • Close the 'Internet Accounts' window by clicking 'Close'
  • Your mail folder will appear in the 'Folders' pane
  • Select 'Inbox' and your mail will be displayed on the right hand side of the main window
