Principal Consultant, Derek Smith & Associates LLC. At the end of the 20th century, as environmental reform began to transform the paper industry, Derek Smith became an agent of change. A multi-national business leader with decades of service to the papermaking, converting, and printing communities, he founded a consulting business which assists organizations in aligning their aspirations for social responsibility with the need for fiscal viability with particular focus on paper and print and allied procurement. Smith has been an advisor and spokesman to environmental non-governmental organizations such as the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI), Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), and Metafore, as well as Fortune 500 corporations and other leading paper, printing and design groups, helping them identify financially viable business opportunities that exist in environmental reform. He works directly with businesses to develop environmentally responsible procurement programs and has served as a subject matter expert to creators of educational content on these and related issues. He is currently a consultant for the xpedx group and a member of their Sustainable Advisory Committee, charged with the development of the group sustainability program and the implementation of staff training in sustainable issues.
