The AWaRMN flag has been flying high at Makerere University in Uganda having been recently selected for a site visit by an evaluation team from the African Union (AU) on the 12th of March 2024. This year Makerere University has been shortlisted for consideration for selection as an AU Centre of Excellence in fisheries and aquaculture.

My visit to the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research innovation and strategic partnership, Rhodes University, South Africa was quite remarkable. The DVC, Dr Nomakwezi Mzilikazi warmly welcomed us and expressed so much delight in seeing me and knowing that I am from Federal University of Technology, Minna, Nigeria.

AWaRMN doctoral scholars, Edgar Tumwesigye and Enahoro Owowenu participated in the concluding conference of the third cohort of the South Africa/Norway (SANO) Exchange Program and Interns for sustainability project funded by the Norwegian Retailer’s Environment Fund.

Sofia LAZAR, an MSc student specializing in water resources, made a noteworthy contribution to the 2023 CPGS Conference under the esteemed African Water Resources Mobility Network (AWaRMN) project.

A recent publication has revealed that there is high antibiotic resistance among Campylobacter isolates from humans, animals, and water in South Africa.

It was not research as usual for six students MSc students from the Institute for Water Research (IWR) at Rhodes University on February 16 and 17, 2023. The six students, Andrew Ali, Havilah Nnadozie, Esther Seriki, Peter Wasswa, Sakikhaya Mabohlo and Sofia Lazar participated in the 5th edition of the W4F Hackathon organised by the UNESCO ICIREWARD International Centre in Montpellier, France.

Gilbert Ndamana and Action Simon, both Masters’ degree students of Applied Hydrobiology, Federal University of Technology, Minna (FUTMINNA) attended the 15th Conference of Zoological Society of Nigeria (ZSN) held at the Tolu Odugbemi Hall, University of Lagos, Akoka, Lagos State, Nigeria; from 27th -30th November 2022.

A review manuscript under African Water Resources Mobility Network (AWaRMN) project from Makerere University has been accepted for publication in Science of the Total Environment (STOTEN).

Research outputs and scientific discoveries usually end up in journal. While the academia appreciates the credible source of knowledge, a layperson such as your granny, the local people in the study area or a colleague in an unrelated field may not under the complex scientific terminology and is unlikely to appreciate this credible source of knowledge.

On 05 – 06 December 2022, I participated in the first International Conference on Sustainable Soil Management: Challenge for Food Security (ICSSM-2022) organized by the Center for Science and Technology in Dry Regions (CRSTRA).
