Community Engagement

  • In the first term, RUCE had its annual CE Extravaganza during O-Week where 1st years were introduced to CE and some of our community partners and initiatives through activities such as trading lives and reading to preschoolers, I helped RUCE with this and participated. I gave planned activities for the year on a termly basis so that my events do not clash with RUCE’s so I can be a part of both and help where I can. I have also helped various Societies with making their projects involving the broader community more mutually beneficial so they do not misrepresent RUCE principles. In the second term, I held a bonding and brainstorming session with my CE Reps in order to show appreciation for their work within the reses as well as to encourage them to keep CE relevant in their halls. In the session, we concluded we’d have a big CE event in the 3rd term which will include the Reps and our community partners. I also participated in the RU & DUT CE Symposium where I presented my paper as I am doing my thesis research on CE and the benefits of being involved in CE activities, which I hope will be valuable in attracting more students to volunteer in the coming years. I have also initiated the SRC's main CE project for 2018 which is twinning with Ntsika High School and mentoring their RCL and sharing leadership experiences with them. In the upcoming, we (SRC & RCL) will be collaborating on a project of their choice which they will leave as their legacy for their school and community, and we will be doing something together for Trading Lives for Nelson Mandela Week when the new term starts. I have also been a part of the 9/10ths mentoring programme with RUCE as a student leader and have had a chance to be part of the strategic planning that goes into successful CE activities. Due to a similar event taking place on campus, I could not host transformation talks in the township, which I did promise as part of my manifesto, but in the coming semester I plan to work with the equity and institutional culture (EIC) office and RUCE in order to plan an even bigger and more encompassing event of the same nature where we educate our broader community on matters that we deal with and also concern them such as intersectionality and the stigmatization of people living with HIV and Aids.

Attended meetings from the very first one with Mynhardt pitching his plans to sessions with the Projects Team and the student performers as well as hype up sessions with the cheerleaders, stuck up posters, stamped tickets, creating buzz on social media on my own accounts as well as the SRC Instagram page I share ownership with the media councillor.

 

  • Last week preps

Helping Madame Projects and the Treasurer finalize details as well as availing myself for last minute meetings, organizing overalls for councillors, buying paintbrushes and creating poster for overall painting, facilitating Kaif Overall day (11am to 3pm), collecting Ubuntu Fund donations from painting and clean up afterwards, and keeping hype up on social media.
