The Rhodes University African Studies Centre (RASC) invites applications for two Postdoctoral Research Fellowships for 2021, tenable for the duration of one year. Baring exceptional circumstances, the awardee is expected to begin the fellowship in January 2021.

The Fellowships are intended to foster existing research, scholarly and/or creative artistic endeavours at the Rhodes African Studies Centre. Ideally, the Fellow's proposed work will closely complement existing programmes of reconfiguring African Studies at the conceptual and structural level, and should align with one or more of the Africa Multiple Cluster of Excellence six research sections of: (a) Moralities, (b) Knowledges, (c) Mobilities, (d) Arts & Aesthetics, (e) Affiliations, and (f) Learning. For more information on these research sections, please contact a prospective mentor who must be a member of the African Cluster Centre system, or Prof. Enocent Msindo, the Director on e.msindo@ru.ac.za

We welcome applications from the following areas: African politics and political theory; African history; water, environmental education and climatic change; Africans arts and aesthetics; African music and musicology; African philosophy, and lastly Languages and Literature (African, English and French) with special reference to multilingualism, Africa and African diaspora literature, gender studies and related themes.

Further information on the ACC can be found at: https://www.ru.ac.za/africanstudiescentre/

    • Although there is no age restriction, potential Fellows must hold a doctoral degree, awarded within the last five years. Candidates must demonstrate exceptional merit as evidenced by the quality and corpus of publications or other recognized forms of achievement relevant to the Fellow's discipline. Fellows are expected to submit at least two papers for publication in accredited journals or book publishers in the first year of their Fellowship.
    • Fellows will contribute to the intellectual life of the Centre by helping to organise and attend workshops, seminars and conferences.
    • Fellows are also encouraged to explore the possibilities of co-publishing with their mentors.
    • An applicant who has not completed his/her PhD at the time the Fellowship is offered must have submitted the PhD thesis by December 2020. In these circumstances, the Centre will require written assurance from the applicant's supervisor that there is a reasonable expectation that the doctoral degree will be awarded.

 Value of the Fellowship

Each Fellowship carries a package of R180 000 per annum with an additional allocation of up to R20 000 to be used to support research or conference costs. The Fellowship cannot be held concurrently with any supplementary funding.

Conditions of Award

The University expects that all publications, creative works and other academic products of the Fellowship will bear appropriate acknowledgement of affiliation to Rhodes University and the funder (as the Director will advise). The University reserves the right to co-ownership of inventions and/or patents directly emanating from research conducted under the sponsorship of the Fellowship.

The University reserves the right to request the refund of any fellowship paid to the Fellow should the Fellow terminate his/her contract prior to its completion.
