Zamansele Nsele

Doctoral Researcher

Zamansele Nsele lectures in Art History and Visual Culture at Rhodes University, and is reading towards a PhD. She has presented academic papers at conferences and colloquiums in South Africa and in the UK. Her research interests range from popular culture to decolonial aesthetics, visuality and the aesthetics of blackface in art practice and performance. Her doctoral research looks analyses an emerging post-apartheid nostalgic turn in art and curatorial practice. She explores the various ways that post-apartheid nostalgia calls upon ethical considerations particularly in relation to archival art. Nsele is interested in the decolonising methodologies in contemporary visual art, which potentially enable liberatory praxis. Prof Simbao is her current supervisor and she also supervised her MA.
