Daniel Retief grew up in Makhanda and is currently studying towards a Masters in Fine Art (MFA). Daniel mainly works in print media, and his work lately explores his family’s rich and complex history. His practice involves personal engagement with themes, using it as an entry point to engage with larger societal issues. Family archives and heirlooms are regular material sources for his work. These are reproduced and reworked in various ways to bring to light multiple themes. The traces of history, identity, and the constant struggle over interpretation are recurring themes in his work. Daniel’s most recent body of work explores the complexity of history and heritage within the contemporary South African landscape.
