Rhodes University recognises entrepreneurship as a critical driver of economic participation, innovation, and social change, particularly within the South African context where graduate unemployment and structural inequality persist. Increasingly, students and graduates are required not only to seek employment but to create value, opportunities, and solutions within their communities and industries.

The Rhodes University Student Entrepreneurship Programme is conceptualised as a structured institutional initiative designed to nurture entrepreneurial thinking, support venture development, and embed entrepreneurship as a viable career pathway for students across disciplines. The programme acknowledges that entrepreneurship is not limited to business creation alone, but includes social entrepreneurship, creative enterprises, and intrapreneurial activity within organisations.

The programme builds on Rhodes University’s academic strengths, values of critical inquiry, and commitment to social responsiveness, positioning students as active economic agents capable of shaping inclusive and sustainable futures.

The programme works in collaboration with the Rhodes University Centre for Entrepreneurship Rapid Incubator (RU-CfERI).

The programme also supports the following student activities/initiatives:

  • The Entrepreneurship Development in Higher Education (EDHE) Programme
  • Hult Prize Rhodes
  • Enactus Rhodes
  • SWEEP Rhodes
  • Rhodes University Local Economic Development (RU-LED)
