Bursary boost for EL woman

Businesswomen's Association helps pay for masters degree.

A bursary to study a masters degree from the Businesswomen's Association (BWA) has boosted the prospects of a young East London woman.

The bursary was made possible by proceeds generated from last year's BWA Regional Business Achiever Awards. This year's awards event, sponsored by Telkom and the Daily Dispatch among others, will be held today at The Venue at Hemingways Mall, with singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka as guest speaker.

The bursary beneficiary, Sisonke Makalima, 25, said she was confident her studies would equip her with highly sought-after financial skills. The Rhodes University student said there were new opportunities on the African continent, and she dreamed of taking part in the transition fuelled by Africa's fast growing economies.

"I am convinced that an education in the field of financial markets will be in high demand in the future," said Makalima. The former Hudson Park pupil said she would not have been able to continue her master's degree had it not been for the BWA bursary.

"The bursary is worth R20 000 and it covers half of my costs." East London BWA public relations and media liaison Zintle Nobangule said the bursary was part of BWA's corporate social investments which seeks to boost women's education.
